INETA Announces Community Champion Award Program

INETA, the International .NET Association with colleague David Silverlight, from Community-Credit.com have created the Community Champion award to recognize, encourage and reward the developers who routinely devote their time, expertise and passion to the benefit of the community.

Once a quarter, INETA will recognize leading contributors as Community Champions. In addition to claiming this prestigious title for twelve months, awardees also receive a letter of commendation, a certificate of achievement, much deserved online recognition, and a few great prizes. Of course, we want this award to motivate even more involvement, so we encourage everyone, including winners, to record your activities. After all, you are eligible to win every twelve months. Find out more and see what others are doing.

Windows Communication Foundation at Fort Smith .NET User Group

Jeremy Sloan will be presenting on Windows Communications Foundation at the next Fort Smith .NET User Group Meeting on July 7th, 2008.

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is Microsoft’s unified programming model for building service-oriented applications. It enables developers to build secure, reliable, transacted solutions that integrate across platforms and interoperate with existing investments.

Jeremy Sloan is a systems programmer for Data-Tronics Corp. in Fort Smith, AR.  Jeremy has been with Data-Tronics for over 12 years where he has used a variety of development tools including C++ and the .NET Framework.  When not solving everyone else’s problems, Jeremy has gained extensive experience building enterprise-level backend functionality that is leveraged by the rest of the company's software developers.

This months meeting location is EagleOne at 4001 Planters Rd., Fort Smith, AR.

Agile Design at NWA .NET User Group

Robert Tennyson will be covering aspects of Agile Design from the Agile, Principles, Patterns and Practices in C# book, by Robert C. Martin, and Micah Martin.  This presentation will focus on what it means to have an agile design.  He will also write the Copy program from the book and work through the process of turning it into a solid agile design.  If you are new to agile design, this would be a good meeting to attend on July 10th, 2008.

Rob has been developing enterprise applications for around 8 years now.  His current development environment is Visual Studio 2008 with ReSharper 4.0 and his current language of choice is C#.  He writes both ASP.NET and Windows applications.  Rob’s current topic of interest is what it means to write Agile and maintainable code.  You can follow Rob on his LetsTalkCode blog.

You can find out more info about this at the Northwest Arkansas .NET User Group, here is a direct link to the calendar event here.

This months meeting location is NWACC Corporate Learning at 4004 N. College Ave, Ste L. Fayetteville, AR.

TechEd 2008 On Fire!!!!

Microsoft TechEd 2008 kicked off Tuesday Morning with an awesome keynote.  My first great experience of the day was ridding the bus over with David Silverlight.  This was awesome for me, David and I have had lots of good conversation over at the INETA booth.  It has also been awesome to meet face to face with several sponsors of the NWA .NET User Group.  The sessions have been great and I can't wait to come back and present on what I have seen. Things I have learned so far:

  1. Microsoft Team Foundation Server can replace Microsoft Project Server as a project management and time-tracking tool.
  2. There is a UNIX TFS Client that allows developers to perform check-in, check-out, and work item updates.
  3. We could recreate the Project Request System with SharePoint in a few days.
  4. We aren't the only ones struggling with TDD, DDD, BDD.
  5. SCRUM is AWESOME!
  6. Other companies are creating Internal User Groups.
  7. We Identified 3 Silos in an organization; Discipline (developers, project managers, etc.), Functional (project teams, Data Admins, Middleware, etc.) and a new one that came up in my Birds-of-a-Feather session, IT and Business users.  Feel silly this one was so obvious that I missed it.  Yet another area where user groups for internally written applications can help facilitate learning and adoption in an organization.  I am planning on a series of post regarding this topic.
  8. I was mentioned by name in one of the recent Dot Net Rocks Podcast.
Well, that is just some of the things I have learned so far, I am already starting to formulate ways that I can leverage these new understandings to make my work environment better.?
